Financial Aid: Loan Information

 

A loan is financial assistance that enables degree-seeking students that are enrolled at least half-time to borrow money from the federal and state government. The Federal Parent PLUS loan is also available for parents, with a favorable credit history, to assist them with paying the educational expenses of their dependent, undergraduate student. These low-interest loans must be repaid after graduation or if the student drops below half-time enrollment. Students who are non-degree seeking are not eligible to borrow through the federal or state loan programs but they may be eligible to borrow through private and/or alternative loan programs up to their Cost of Attendance.

 

Master Promissory Note (MPN)

Borrowers are responsible for signing a Master Promissory Note (MPN) for each loan program they choose to use. When signed, the MPN is a binding legal document, whereby the borrower agrees to repay the loan including accrued interest. The MPN should be read carefully and a copy retained for the borrower’s records. Please select a link below for your particular loan program:

On-Line Entrance Counseling

Federal Perkins, Federal Direct Loan (Stafford), and/or Graduate PLUS loan borrowers, must complete an on-line Entrance Counseling session(s), which explains their rights and obligations if they choose to borrow from one of these federal loan programs. This must be completed before any disbursement(s) can be made to the student. Please select the link below for your particular loan program:

On-Line Exit Counseling

Prior to graduating or leaving UTHSCSA, Federal Perkins, Federal Stafford, and/or Graduate PLUS borrowers, from either the Direct Loan or Federal Family Education Loan programs must complete an on-line Exit Counseling session(s). This session(s), will explain the borrower’s rights and obligations as they enter repayment of their federal student loan(s). This must be completed in order for a financial aid representative to sign your “University Clearance” or “Graduation” form prior to your exiting the University.
