Federal College Work-Study

Federal Work Study at UTHSCSA is an exciting way to bolster your resume and offers a creative way to keep your student loan debt to a minimum. Work-study is real, on-the-job training and is a way to obtain important pre-graduation work experience. Expect to treat your work-study job as a professional position—it’s a great opportunity to develop skills, network in your field, and build a solid reference for future employment.

What Types of Jobs are Available?

The Office of Veteran Services and Financial Aid works through our campus partners to provide employment opportunities. Positions available can involve working in the Library, or tutoring fellow students, or working within the community in service positions.

All work-study jobs should provide either a benefit to the student directly (such as a better understanding of future career possibilities) or should benefit your classmates (such as helping the Library with extending their hours of operation for students).

What is the Rate of Pay?

All positions will be paid at least minimum wage, but the rate may vary depending on job title and duties.

Eligibility Requirements

Federal Work-Study employment is a financial aid program that is awarded to students who have financial need. Below are general guidelines and do not reflect all possible scenarios.

  1. Each student must apply for Federal financial aid using the FAFSA and indicate they are interested in the work-study program
  2. Each student must have financial need as determined by the HSC using federal guidelines
  3. Each student must apply for a position as specified by our individual partners

Work-study is an employment opportunity offered to you through the Office of Veteran Services and Financial Aid, and is a need-based program, so not all students qualify. If you qualify and funds are available, you will receive work-study as part of your award package. Should our funding deplete, students may request to be placed on a waiting list for possible future funding.

Forms

Needless to say working at a state institution requires a certain amount of paperwork some of which is completed (or partially completed) by the hiring department. The rest are completed by the employee, generally in the presence of the employer. For a listing of required forms please follow this link: Work Study Employment Forms. When submitting these forms you generally need to complete them in an orientation session or in person at the Office of Veteran Services and Financial Aid (Med 318.L).
