Mandatory Liability Insurance - All Schools
Students enrolled in a health component institution of The University of Texas System in a program that involves direct patient care activities are required to purchase professional liability insurance through the university as a prerequisite to enrollment. The policy extends coverage to the insured only in her or his student role.
Dental School
For Dental students our insurance vendor is Brown and Brown of Tampa Florida. They will send Verification Letters to our office for each dental student enrolled. We will pass these letters on to our dental students as soon as we receive them. The coverage is $1,000,000 each claim and $3,000,000 in the aggregate. Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS)
Graduate students are not required to have liability insurance. This applies to only those students that are in a Basic Science Program. Those graduate students in other programs are covered by the appropriate school.
School of Allied Health Sciences and School of Nursing
For Allied Health and Nursing students (including FNPs and PAs), an outside vendor provides the coverage. The Bill Beatty Insurance Agency of Dallas is our agent. They will provide Certificates of Coverage upon request to any of our clinical sites that need this verification. You may call 1-800-451-8358 for this document. Our policy year runs from Sept. 1 to Aug. 31. We normally do not get our new policy until about October. This of course is after some students are already on a clinical rotation and might be a problem for some sites. It is best to allow the vendor to provide the necessary verification of coverage. This office will in July of each year provide to the vendor a letter of intent to continue the coverage for the new academic year. We use this letter of intent to verify that for the period of time from September to October that we have coverage. Our insurance payment for fall is normally made on or about October 1 of each year. This policy is valid for any university-approved clinical site in the United States and includes $1,000,000 coverage (each occurrence) and $3,000,000 coverage (in the aggregate).
School of Medicine
For School of Medicine students, liability coverage is provided through the UT System. The coverage is $25,000 per claim.
