The mission of the Counseling Service is to provide aid, support and counsel to students dealing with the complex personal, social and academic demands of the professional school setting.
The Counseling Service utilizes principles of prevention in establishing programs. Services will promote and enhance the development of academic competence, emotional stability, life-long learning styles and effective decision-making skills. The Counseling Service is committed to a triad of service, training and research.
The Counseling Service applies principles and skills of education, counseling psychology and psychiatry with the highest degree of professional competence and commitment to assist students in accomplishing their academic, career and professional development goals. The Counseling Service contributes to the training of psychologists and psychiatrists by providing supervision of their activities in accordance with professional and statutory standards. The Counseling Service engages in applied research that elucidates the counseling process, the issues associated with student professional development and the evaluation and development of Counseling Services activities and programs.
The Counseling Service has a multidisciplinary staff including residents in psychiatry and psychology
and is organized to meet the needs of Health Science Center students.
